We're back in business after the Midwest jaunt with a bulk look at the last 12 days in the D-FW ratings wars.
As the November "sweeps" near -- start date is Nov. 1 -- here's how the four major newscast competitions are looking. Averages are for the eight weekdays during the period of Oct. 12-23.
10 P.M.
TOTAL HOMES
Belo8 -- 226,511
NBC5 and CBS11 -- 158,314
Fox4 -- 116,909 (some nights were affected by baseball playoff overruns)
25-to-54-YEAR-OLDS
Belo8 -- 134,890
NBC5 -- 117,670
CBS11 -- 94,710
Fox4 -- 74,620
Comment: It doesn't take an Einstein -- or even an Uncle Barky -- to deduce that Belo8 has returned to its late night dominance of old, particularly in total homes. Meanwhile, formerly dominant NBC5 and a rejuvenated CBS11 will be waging an all-out war for second place in total homes. The Peacock's chances are dimmed by downsized lead-ins from the NBC network. But CBS11 has been doing a slightly better job of retaining the nice-sized audiences it inherits from its network, particularly on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday nights.

TOTAL HOMES
Fox4 -- 114,473
Belo8 -- 85,246
NBC5 -- 75,504
CBS11 -- 38,970
25-to-54-YEAR-OLDS
Fox4 -- 77,490
Belo8 -- 54,530
NBC5 -- 45,920
CBS11 -- 20,090
Comment: Fox4 is the kingpin here, and won't be caught during the sweeps. NBC5 and Belo8 both have seen their fortunes reversed in recent months. The Peacock won this competition in total homes during the February sweeps while Belo8 had the top numbers among 25-to-54-year-olds. But Fox4 rebounded in both measurements last May and has only gotten stronger over the summer and early fall. CBS11 remains well out of the money, although it's making tortoise-like progress.

TOTAL HOMES
Belo8 -- 160,750
NBC5 -- 104,731
CBS11 -- 97,424
Fox4 -- 73,068 (some nights were affected by baseball pre-game shows)
25-to-54-YEAR-OLDS
Belo8 -- 68,880
NBC5 -- 54,500
Fox4 -- 45,920
CBS11 -- 34,440
Comment: Belo8 remains in command, with CBS11 a threat to overtake NBC5 in the total homes ratings. Smallish lead-ins from the CBS Evening News are its biggest obstacle, although Katie Couric lately is closing the gap in D-FW on Brian Williams' NBC Nightly News.
5 P.M.
TOTAL HOMES
Belo8 -- 131,522
Fox4 -- 92,528
NBC5 -- 90,117
CBS11 -- 63,326
25-to-54-YEAR-OLDS
Belo8 -- 60,270
Fox4 -- 48,790
NBC5 -- 45,920
CBS11 -- 25,830
Comment: Belo8 is mildly vulnerable in the race for advertiser-preferred 25-to-54-year-olds. And the Peacock again will be fighting to stay out of third place, this time on two fronts.
We haven't forgotten the Cowboys ratings. Here's how all seven games stack up in the battle to flatten everything in their paths:
Cowboys-Patriots (Oct. 14 on CBS) -- 884,123 homes
Cowboys-Bills (Oct. 8 on ESPN/TXA21) -- 856,896
Cowboys-Bears (Sept. 23 on NBC) -- 854,896
Cowboys-Vikings (Oct. 21 on Fox) -- 852,460
Cowboys-Giants (Sept. 9 on NBC) -- 803,748
Cowboys-Rams (Sept. 30 on Fox) -- 650,305
Cowboys-Dolphins (Sept. 16 on Fox) -- 625,949
