Local Nielsen ratings snapshot (Wed., April 16)

ABC's two-hour Democratic presidential candidate debate from Philadelphia held up surprisingly well Wednesday night opposite entertainment programming on rival networks.

Moderated by Charles Gibson and George Stephanopoulos -- and starring Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton -- the debate averaged 170,492 D-FW homes in ABC's 7 to 9 p.m. slot. The network's following Men In Trees then withered to 112,038 homes.

Obama-Clinton obviously couldn't beat Fox's American Idol results show, which had a league-leading 314,192 homes from 8 to 9 p.m. But dose Dems did all right against the likes of CBS' Criminal Minds (194,848 homes) and Big Brother 9 (80,375); NBC's Deal or No Deal (163,185) and Law & Order: Criminal Intent (75,504); and Fox's 'Til Death (143,700) and Back To You (141,265).

Advertiser-craved 18-to-49-year-olds didn't respond in kind, though. The debate beat only Big Brother 9 and Law & Order: CI in that key demo.

Here's another telling barometer. Obama-Clinton in D-FW had a robust 11.0 Nielsen rating among the old folks at home -- viewers 55 years and older. But it had a dinky .7 rating with 18-to-34-year-olds. Respectively, that's 176,000 viewers vs. 11,246. Youth vote? Hoo-hah.

The Dallas Mavericks' convincing regular season-ending win against potent New Orleans had low scores on both Fox Sports Southwest and ESPN. An average of 29,227 D-FW homes went with FSS while 68,197 chose ESPN. A 6 p.m. start time obviously didn't help.

CBS11's 10 p.m. local newscast took the gold in total homes, retaining a good share of a commanding lead-in from CBS' CSI: NY. WFAA8 rebounded to win among 25-to-54-year-olds, the main advertiser target audience for news programming.

The 6 a.m. firsts also were split, with Fox4 prevailing in total homes and WFAA8 the top choice of 25-to-54-year-olds.

WFAA8 again scored across-the-board wins at 5 and 6 p.m.
