Fueled by American Idol and a new episode of House, Fox again rode high and mighty in Tuesday's prime-time ratings.
Fox4's local 9 p.m. newscast also prospered while the station's early morning ratings righted themselves somewhat in what likely will be a fierce February "sweeps" battle with Belo8.
Idol as usual drew the biggest crowd, with 379,954 D-FW homes tuned to its one-hour audition show from Omaha, Neb. House kept 333,677 homes, even though its new episode turned out to be a holdover, strike-delayed Christmas show. But Dr. House was a grouse as usual.
Fox4's 9 p.m. news had 189,977 total homes, tying a repeat of NBC's Law & Order: SVU for first place. The two programs also were deadlocked among advertiser-coveted 18-to-49-year-olds.
Belo 8 then took the 10 p.m. news gold in total homes, but NBC5 edged into first place with 25-to-54-year-olds, the main advertiser target audience for news programming.
The 6 a.m. war in total homes went to Fox4's Good Day (107,166 homes), which held off Belo8's Daybreak (102,295 homes) to win in that measurement for only the second time in the last seven weekdays. The two stations tied for the top spot among 25-to-54-year-olds.
Belo8 had twin wins at both 5 and 6 p.m.
With just one day remaining before the four-week sweeps start on Thursday, Belo8 looks like a lock to again prosper in the early evening hours. It also should win at 10 p.m. in total homes, with CBS11 and NBC5 fighting for second place. But the Peacock has a slim chance to topple Belo8 at 10 p.m. among 25-to-54-year-olds. Emphasis on slim.
That makes the early morning a dogfight in both ratings measurements, with Fox4 hoping to keep an onrushing Belo8 at bay to win its third straight sweeps crowns.
NBC5, which edged Fox4 at 6 a.m. in total homes last February, is now well back in third. CBS11 remains stuck in fourth but is very slowly closing the gap.
