Local Nielsen ratings snapshot (Thurs., Oct. 11)

By ED BARK
Again profiting from a sizable network lead-in, CBS11's 10 p.m. newscast hit the top spot in total homes for the second straight night Thursday.

That's cause for confetti at a station that took ratings beatings around the clock under the recently terminated run 'n' gun regime of former news director Regent Ducas. Now taking a higher road, CBS11 is seeing signs of a gradual payoff.

The latest late night newscast Nielsens gave the station a first-place haul of 182,670 homes, just ahead of Belo8's 180,234 homes. NBC5 again slid into third place with 168,056 homes.

It obviously helps when your 9:45 to 10 p.m. lead-in is CBS' Without A Trace (272,787 homes) instead of NBC's ER (160,750) or ABC's Big Shots (138,829). Still, in the old days -- a couple of months ago -- CBS11 would have run third despite its network's largesse. Now it's a serious threat to punch the once-dominant Peacock into the third spot when the November "sweeps" begin heating up the action.

CBS11 remains an also-ran, though, among 25-to-54-year-olds, the main advertiser target audience for news programming. Without A Trace had only a slight edge in that audience demo. The result: Belo8 edged NBC5 for first place, with CBS11 falling to a distant third.

Belo8 also won with 25-to-54-year-olds at 6 a.m., beating the usually victorious Fox4. The order of finish was reversed in total homes, with Fox4 on top. The 7 to 9 a.m. portion of its Good Day also whipped the competing network morning shows for the eighth straight day in the 25-to-54 measurement. But ABC's Good Morning America ended Good Day's concurrent streak in total homes with a narrow first place finish.

Belo8 had twin wins at 5 p.m. and also edged the Peacock in total homes at 6 p.m. The two stations tied for the top spot at the later hour in the 25-to-54 demo.
