Local Nielsen ratings snapshot (Thurs., Oct. 4)

ABC and CBS traded prime-time punches Thursday while dominating the D-FW ratings in both total homes and with advertiser-courted 18-to-49-year-olds.

CBS' Survivor: China opened the night with a narrow total homes win over ABC's Ugly Betty. But UB then drooped to fifth place among 18-49-year-olds in the night's closest battle. Here's how it looked in this key demo:

Survivor: China (CBS) -- 111,600
My Name Is Earl (NBC) and Smallville (CW) -- 89,900
30 Rock (NBC) -- 86,800
Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader? (Fox) -- 83,700
Ugly Betty (ABC) -- 77,500

At 8 p.m. ABC's Grey's Anatomy knocked off CBS' CSI: Crime Scene Investigation in both ratings measurements, in each case drawing the largest audiences of the night. CBS' Without A Trace retaliated by winning across the board at 9 p.m.

In the local news derby, Belo8's 10 p.m. broadcast again overcame a substantial lead-in deficit to pound CBS11 into a distant second place in total homes. Belo8 also won easily among 25-to-54-year-olds, the preferred advertiser demographic for news programming. NBC5 slipped ahead of CBS11 to finish second in that measurement.

Fox4 again controlled the 6 a.m. ratings, with the 7 to 9 a.m. portion of its Good Day likewise wiping out the three network morning shows in both measurements.

Belo8 ran the table at 5 p.m. and also took the 6 p.m. faceoff in total homes. NBC5 popped up to tie Belo8 at the later hour among 25-to-54-year-olds.
