Local Nielsen ratings snapshot (Wed., April 28) -- Idol runs wild on May "sweeps" eve

By ED BARK
Fox's American Idol has been slipping nationally, but the continued presence of Fort Worth's Casey James seems to be buoying the D-FW ratings.

James dodged another Bottom Two bullet Wednesday night while 447,896 viewers watched Lady Gaga-ish Siobhan Magnus get evicted by viewers. The 27-year-old blues/country singer is now precariously amongst the show's Final 5.

Idol's 8 p.m. haul exceeded the combined audience total for competing programs on ABC, CBS and NBC. Namely new episodes of Modern Family (176,444) and Cougar Town (88,222), a Criminal Minds rerun (142,512) and a first-run episode of Mercy (101,795).

At 9 p.m., the premiere of ABC's Happy Town wore a fourth-place frown with 128,940 viewers opposite a new episode of NBC's Law & Order: SVU (223,948), Fox4's 9 p.m. local newscast (210,375) and CBS' CSI: NY reprise (183,230). Happy Town inched up to third place with advertiser-courted 18-to-49-year-olds, outdrawing the CSI: NY rerun.

Wednesday also marked the last night before the start of the one-month May "sweeps" rating period. Which means that repeats will be an extreme rarity until it all ends.

Local TV newscast proprietors are particularly interested in this one, because the February sweeps" were largely disregarded due to NBC's Winter Olympics coverage. So this is the first scorecard since November.

In 10 p.m. news derby results, NBC5 and WFAA8 tied for first in total viewers while Fox4 and the Peacock shared the gold among 25-to-54-year-olds, the main advertiser target audience for news programming.

NBC5 again cruised through the 6 a.m. competitions, beating runnerup Fox4 in both measurements.

CBS11 won at 6 p.m. in total viewers for the fifth time in the last six weekdays, but Fox4 again ran first with 25-to-54-year-olds.

NBC5 and WFAA8 tied for the 5 p.m. top spot in total viewers, with Fox4 ruling the 25-to-54 demographic.
