Idol update: North Texas ups and downs

Arlington's Todrick Hall looms large after Idol's 1st Hollywood cuts.

By ED BARK
American Idol's first Hollywood round came and went Tuesday night with at least two North Texans going home while three clearly survived.

Among the 90-some contestants moving on to Wednesday night are 24-year-old Todrick Hall of Arlington (a personal favorite), Casey James, 27, of Fort Worth (who auditioned in Denver) and 20-year-old Tim Urban of Duncanville.

Among the evictees were Maegan Wright, 21, of Richardson and the show's resident kitten with a whip, former Barney and Friends co-star Erica Rhodes, 24, of Irving.

Spoilers are out there for those who want to see the alleged final 24, which will officially be announced on Wednesday, Feb. 17th. But I have no interest in looking or spoiling anything -- for myself or others. It's more fun to just play along until spoilers are dealt out when Idol goes live on Tuesday, Feb. 23rd with the top 12 women semifinalists performing first. The initial viewer vote-off is on Feb. 25th, when four of the 24 will be cut.

Texas sent a total of 26 hopefuls to Hollywood, with 17 of them from the D-FW viewing area. Not everyone was shown on Tuesday's show, and americanidol.com has no further information on who survived the first cut and who didn't.

Tuesday's Idol also marked the debut of Ellen DeGeneres as the show's Paula Abdul replacement. She flexed both a critical eye and a quick wit, attributes that Abdul never really mustered during her eight-season run.
