TV audiences wisely took a hike over the Memorial Day weekend, leaving the tube starved for attention.
Nothing generated much audience interest, not even the venerable Indy 500. Its Sunday afternoon running on ABC averaged just 138,514 D-FW viewers while the final round of the Byron Nelson golf tournament in Las Colinas holed out with only 90,034 viewers.
The Texas Rangers' marathon extra inning loss to Kansas City Friday night drew the weekend's biggest TV audience. TXA21's telecast peaked at 325,508 viewers between 10:15 and 10:30 p.m. The Rangers' Friday and Saturday night games (the latter on Fox) were the only TV attractions to average more than 200,000 viewers during the entire four-day holiday soiree.
On Memorial Day night, the 9 p.m. premiere of ABC's Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition drew a skimpy-sized 103,886 viewers, beating only a competing Hawaii Five-0 repeat on CBS. Weight Loss also ran third with advertiser-craved 18-to-49-year-olds.
All of the four major TV news providers took holiday knees throughout Monday, save for WFAA8 and its 10 p.m. local edition. Ironic considering that the station crapped out on the final night of the May "sweeps" rather than go head-to-head with CBS11. Fox4 and WFAA8 tied for the most total viewers at 10 p.m. while Fox4 had the nod with 25-to-54-year-olds, the main advertiser target audience for news programming. But WFAA8 officially gets both wins.
The four stations all came to play in Friday's local news derby, with WFAA8 ending up as the only winless station.
CBS11 ran first at 10 p.m. in total viewers, but NBC5 had the 25-to-54 gold.
The Peacock also edged Fox4 for the top spot in total viewers at 6 a.m., with reverse results among 25-to-54-year-olds.
CBS11 won at 6 p.m. in total viewers while Fox4 did likewise at 5 p.m. Both of the early evening wins with 25-to-54-year-olds went to Fox4.
