Local Nielsen ratings snapshot (Fri.-Sun., Aug. 12-14) -- twang tops Rangers, PGA playoff

Put a bunch of country singers on the same stage, check the sound system, show 'em on camera for three hours and -- shebang -- watch the D-FW ratings meter get happy.

ABC's CMA Music Festival: Country's Night to Rock proved to be a big draw(l), averaging 242,400 viewers Sunday night before WFAA8's following 10 p.m. news reaped an even bigger harvest with 332,434 viewers.

Even a three-hole playoff in pro golf's last major, the PGA championship, couldn't keep up. It had 214,697 viewers in the climactic 6 to 7 p.m. hour.

The first-place Texas Rangers, closing out a three-game sweep at Oakland, averaged 166,217 viewers on Fox Sports Southwest Sunday for an elongated game during afternoon and early evening hours.

Saturday afternoon's Rangers game, shown by Fox, drew 173,143 viewers while the late night Friday win on TXA21 had 152,365 viewers.

Those are smallish crowds for a league-leading team, but the Rangers clearly are penalized by playing in the AL West. The night games start late. And two of the division's four teams, Oakland and Seattle, are among the AL's worst besides having mostly no-name players. Things should pick up a bit on the next four nights, though, when the road warrior Rangers try to keep the still dangerous Angels in second place.

Downside: all four Rangers-Angels games likely will stretch until midnight or later. And on Friday night, even a crummy NFL pre-season game on Fox between Tampa Bay and Kansas City averaged more viewers (166,217) than the same night's Rangers win. So did CBS' Flashpoint for that matter. A new episode of the Canadian-made cop series was Friday's biggest draw with 207,771 viewers.

In Friday's local news derby results, NBC5 won at 10 p.m. in both total viewers and 25-to-54-year-olds, the main advertiser target audience for news programming.

The Peacock also tied Fox4 for first place at 6 a.m. in total viewers, with Fox4 taking the 25-to-54 gold.

Fox4, NBC5 and CBS11 shared the top spot at 6 p.m in total viewers, but Fox4 had first place to itself with 25-to-54-year-olds.

At 5 p.m., Fox4 won in total viewers and shared the 25-to-54 lead with WFAA8.
