Reliable sources close to the station report that Dallas-based KDAF-TV ("The 33") plans to launch a 5:30 p.m. local newscast in September or earlier.
It would compete against the three network evening newscasts and Fox4's local edition, which in the March "sweeps" ratings period ran third at 5:30 behind ABC's World News and the NBC Nightly News, which tied for first.
As previously reported on unclebarky.com, The 33 recently bolstered its news staff by hiring two "backpack journalists" who were laid off in April by The Dallas Morning News. The newcomers, Holly Yan and Dan X. McGraw, started on Thursday according to a staff memo from news director David Duitch.
