NBC5 nipped Belo8 in Tuesday's 10 p.m. newscast ratings, ending the ABC station's nine-night winning streak in homes.
The Peacock averaged 238,00 homes, with Belo8 right behind at 218,960 in a battle between 10 p.m.'s two news Goliaths. Belo8 beat NBC5 by an even tighter margin among 25-to-54-year-olds, the main advertiser target audience for news programming.
Belo8 still holds a slight overall edge through 14 of the February sweeps' 20 weeknights, drawing 208,250 homes (8.75 Nielsen rating) to the Peacock's 200,396 (an 8.42 rating). NBC5 remains in first, by a shrinking but reasonably comfortable margin, among 25-to-54-year-olds.
In the still tight early morning race, the Peacock prevailed Tuesday in homes but finished second to Belo8 in the 25-54 demo. After 14 mornings, NBC5 is leading runnerup Fox4 in homes, with Belo8 and Fox4 in a virtual first-place tie among 25-to-54-year-olds.
Belo8 again swept the 5 and 6 p.m. news competitions Tuesday. In the sweeps to date it has a solid lead in homes but is still being challenged by NBC5 in the 25-to-54 race.
Tuesday otherwise belonged to Fox's American Idol. The show's two-hour live sing-off among its 12 male finalists averaged 402,220 homes in D-FW. The closest competing show between 7 and 9 p.m., CBS' NCIS, drew 178,500 homes.
Idol of course wins even bigger among 18-to-49-year-olds, the principal advertiser target audience for entertainment programming. But it also draws a surprisingly large crowd of older viewers, even though it's a tough choice for them between Idol and NCIS. Here's a telescoped look at the two shows' performances with 18-to-34-year-olds and with viewers 55 years and older.
18-to-34
Idol -- 122,094
NCIS -- 28,917
55-and-over
Idol -- 195,200
NCIS -- 188,800
Fox4's 9 p.m. local newscast again prospered from Idol's lead-in Tuesday night. It finished first from 9 to 10 p.m. with 18-to-49-year-olds and 25-to-54-year-olds while placing a close second in total homes to NBC's Law & Order: SVU.
