American Idol roared back into view Tuesday night and also took Fox's new Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader? to the head of the class.
Smarter, which proved to be dumb fun with Jeff Foxworthy as host, drew 309,400 D-FW homes from 8:30 to 9 p.m. That's solid audience retention from Idol, which averaged 352,240 homes for its 90-minute run. Of course both shows also cleaned up among 18-to-49-year-olds, the key advertiser target audience for entertainment programming.
At 9 p.m., ABC reporter Bob Woodruff's To Iraq and Back won its time period with 223,729 homes, besting NBC's runnerup Law & Order: SVU (195,160 homes). But SVU had the edge with 18-to-49-year-olds.
On the local news front, NBC5's 10 p.m. show eked out a too-little-too-late win over Belo8, which is poised to claim its first victory in homes at 10 p.m. since fall 2001.
Of more importance to the Peacock was its win among 25-to-54-year-olds, the main advertiser target for news programming. With just Wednesday night remaining in the February sweeps, NBC5 will edge Belo8 in this important audience demo.
NBC5 and Belo8 tied for first in homes at 6 a.m., where the Peacock will barely take the sweeps crown. But Belo8 turned the tables with 25-to-54-year-olds and likely will nip Fox4 for first place when the final numbers are in on Thursday.
Belo8 as usual won at 5 and 6 p.m. in both audience measurements, where it's pretty much been coasting throughout the sweeps.
