The hottest local newscast in town isn't the one you might expect.

Reaping big dividends from a newly potent prime-time lineup, Fox4's 9 p.m. local news is whipping up on competing network entertainment programming. Fueled by another fat American Idol lead-in, Fox4 won its time slot again Wednesday night. In fact, other than Idol it was the most-watched program of the entire day, drawing an overall average of 238,000 homes from 9 to 10 p.m.

That stretched the winning streak to three weeknights in a row and five out of the last seven. Even with an asterisk attached, that's pretty impressive.

Fox4's homegrown Good Day also beat the network morning shows from 7 to 9 a.m. But the 6 to 7 a.m. portion of the program continues to struggle against NBC5's local edition. More on that in a bit.

The Dallas Mavericks one-point road win against the mad three-point bombing Memphis Grizzlies had another sturdy showing on Fox Sports Southwest. The game averaged 121,380 homes, peaking at 185,640 in the closing 15 minutes.

Idol, for the record, had 402,220 homes in its 8 p.m. slot, easily more than twice the haul of any competing program.

In the local news wars, NBC5 had another strong showing at 10 p.m. on February "sweeps" eve. The Peacock won in both homes and with 25-to-54-year-olds, the key advertiser target audience for news programming.

NBC5 also took the 6 a.m. competition in both ratings measurements, with Fox4 lagging in second place despite some high-visibility promotion during Idol.

Belo8 finished first across the board at both 5 and 6 p.m.
