Belo 8's 10 p.m. newscasts bucked a lead-in disadvantage and won for the second straight night Thursday. So the horse race is on after six nights of the February "sweeps," with longtime frontrunner NBC5 still holding a small lead.
The Peacock usually wins on Thursdays, with NBC's ER still sending nice-sized audiences to the 10 p.m. news. But Belo8 survived a sharp audience dropoff from Grey's Anatomy to Men In Trees on a night dominated by news of Anna Nicole Smith's death and Wade Phillips rebirth as the Dallas Cowboys' new head coach.
Belo8 drew 235,620 homes at 10 p.m. to beat back NBC5's 211,820 homes. The ABC station also nipped NBC5 among 25-to-54-year-olds, the key advertiser target audience for news programming.
NBC5 countered at 6 a.m. with first-place finishes in both ratings measurements. The Peacock also scored a rare double win at 6 p.m. and placed first at 5 p.m. with 25-to-54-year-olds. Belo8 had a narrow win in homes at 5 p.m.
On the entertainment front, NBC's ER remains resilient, topping the 9 to 10 p.m. slot in both homes and among 18-to-49-year-olds, the favored audience for entertainment programming. But ABC's Grey's Anatomy clearly reigns supreme on the medical drama front. It's drawing larger audiences in D-FW than even Fox's American Idol. Here's a telescoped look at Thursday's scorecard:
Total Homes
Grey's Anatomy -- 485,520
ER -- 228,480
18-to-49-Year-Olds
Grey's Anatomy -- 390,000
ER -- 180,000
In the 7 p.m. slot, CBS' premiere of the new Survivor: Fiji was no match for ABC's Ugly Betty, losing in both homes and with 18-to-49ers.
