Reporter Jeff Smith leaving NBC5, heading to Israel (updated)

NBC5 reporter Jeff Smith, who’d been working the early morning shift, is saying goodbye to all that in a big way after joining the Fort Worth-based station in January of 2013.
“Today is my last day,” he tweeted Friday morning. “I’m making ‘Aliyah’ -- immigrating to Israel -- and charting a new journey. Thanks for all your support, Texas!”
NBC5 news director Mark Ginther said in an email reply Friday that “Jeff is making the move to Israel for a variety of reasons. One of them is the dream of becoming a foreign correspondent. He’s a good, hard-working reporter. It’s a real loss for us, but I’m happy he’s pursuing his dream.”
Smith, a New Jersey native and graduate of Northwestern University, came to NBC5 from Charlotte’s ABC affiliate, WSOC-TV, where he had spent two and a half years.
