Local Nielsen ratings snapshot (Thurs., June 13) -- numbers up for both Warriors & concluding Game 6 of NBA Finals

By ED BARK
@unclebarkycom on Twitter
Thursday night’s concluding and classic Game 6 of the NBA Finals drove the D-FW ratings higher and higher.

The Toronto Raptors won their first title, 114-110, after the already injury-depleted, defending champion Golden State Warriors lost red hot Klay Thompson toward the end of the third quarter. Stretching to 10:48 p.m. on ABC, the game averaged 492,051 total viewers and 262,670 within the advertiser-coveted 18-to-49-year-old age range.

The Warriors closed out the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2017 and 2018 before the Finals could reach a Game 6. In 2016, Game 6 between the same two teams averaged a lower 474,521 total viewers and 219,123 in the 18-to-49 realm.

Thursday’s finale soared in the closing full 15-minute segment, when Raptors-Warriors drew 681,842 total viewers and 380,419 in the 18-to-49 demographic. Among the four major pro sports, the NBA continues to pull in the highest percentages of 18-to-49ers, with Game 6 easily surpassing the 50 percent mark. That’s lip-smacking good if you’re in the advertising sales department.

In contrast, Fox’s prime-time coverage of the PGA’s opening round of the U.S. Open averaged 63,264 total viewers and 15,096 in the 18-to-49 motherlode.

Here are Thursday’s local news derby results, with WFAA8’s 10 p.m. edition again out of the mix because of the NBA Finals run over.

Fox4 took the downsized 10 p.m. race in both total viewers and with 25-to-54-year-olds (main advertiser target audience for news programming).

But the big news came at 6 a.m., where WFAA8 beat longtime frontrunner Fox4 in both ratings measurements. That hasn’t happened in ages. As previously posted, WFAA8’s Daybreak has been at or near parity with Fox4’s Good Day this month. Viewing levels are deflated due to school being out and vacations in progress. So a true test will come in September, but this certainly bears watching.

WFAA8 otherwise also swept the 5 p.m. competitions and had the most 25-to-54-year-olds at 6 p.m. NBC5 won in total viewers at 5 p.m.

Local Nielsen ratings snapshot (Wed., June 12) -- hockey at last gets a Cup full

By ED BARK
@unclebarkycom on Twitter
The ratings haven’t been kind to the Stanley Cup finals in these parts. But Wednesday night’s deciding Game 7, while certainly not a blockbuster, at least reigned as the overall top TV attraction in D-FW’s prime-time Nielsens.

The St. Louis Blues’ 4-1 road win over the Boston Bruins, which ended at 9:41 p.m. on NBC, averaged 119,498 total viewers and 48,307 within the advertiser-prized 18-to-49-year-old age range.

Fox4 9 p.m. local newscast drew more total viewers (161,674). But the closing 9 to 9:45 portion of the Stanley Cup game (Nielsen measures in 15-minute increments) tied the news with that same number of viewers. And during the actual running time of the game, Lord Stanley won throughout the night with 18-to-49ers.

ABC’s launch of its summertime game show bloc, including the premieres of new versions of Press Your Luck and Card Sharks, ran an overall third in total viewers behind hockey and the Fox/Fox4 lineup. In the 18-to-49 realm, Press Your Luck tied Fox’s competing Masterchef for second place in this key demographic before Card Sharks had second place to itself from 8 to 9 p.m. and Match Game faded to a distant third in the 9 p.m. hour.

Here are Wednesday’s local news derby results.

WFAA8 won at 10 p.m. in both total viewers and with 25-to-54-year-olds (main advertiser target audience for news programming).

Fox4 likewise swept the 6 a.m. and 5 p.m. races. At 6 p.m., WFAA8 won in total viewers and tied CBS11 for the top spot with 25-to-54-year-olds.

Local Nielsen ratings snapshot (Fri.-Tues., June 6-11) -- AGT & NBA

By ED BARK
@unclebarkycom on Twitter
Absent the dominating NBA Finals, a new two hours of NBC’s America’s Got Talent easily topped Tuesday’s prime-time ratings.

Airing as usual from 7 to 9 p.m., AGT drew 295,231 D-FW viewers and 87,557 in the advertiser-prized 18-to-49-year-old age range.

ABC’s competing The Bachelorette came up lame, both as a show and in the Nielsens, with 133,557 total viewers and 45,288 in the 18-to-49 realm.

In Monday’s prime-time festivities, ABC’s Game 5 of the NBA Finals, with the Golden State Warriors nipping the Toronto Raptors by a point, scored big with 470,963 total viewers and 235,498 in the 18-to-49 motherlode. Nothing else came remotely close. There are no comparative numbers for last year’s Game 5, because there wasn’t one. The Warriors swept the Cleveland Cavaliers in four games.

Sunday night’s ratings, which featured both CBS’ Tony Awards and NBC’s Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals, were not computed locally due to heavy power outages throughout the viewing area. So we’ll never know how those two very disparate events matched up.

On Friday, ABC’s Game 4 of the NBA Finals, with the Raptors routing the Warriors, averaged a significantly lower 351,465 total viewers, with 196,248 in the 18-to-48 demographic. Last year’s Game 4 closeout pulled in 384,593 total viewers and 199,718 in the 18-to-49 realm.

Here are the weekday local news derby results.

Friday -- CBS11 swept a downsized three-way 10 p.m. race in both total viewers and with 25-to-54-year-olds (main advertiser target audience for news programming).

Fox4 ran the table at both 6 a.m. and 5 p.m. while WFAA8 had twin wins at 6 p.m.

Monday -- With WFAA8’s 10 p.m. newscast again delayed by the NBA Finals, CBS11 enjoyed another win in total viewers while Fox4 was tops with 25-to-54-year-olds.

Fox4 won at 6 a.m. in total viewers and tied WFAA8 for first place among 25-to-54-year-olds.

NBC5 ran the table at 6 p.m. and added a 5 p.m. win in total viewers. Fox4 drew the most 25-to-54-year-olds at 5 p.m.

Tuesday -- WFAA8 paced the 10 p.m. competition in total viewers while CBS11 had the most 25-to-54-year-olds.

At 6 a.m., Fox4 and WFAA8 tied for the lead in total viewers, but WFAA8 won among 25-to-54-year-olds to end a Fox4 winning streak that endured for more than a year. Viewing levels are down with the kids out of school and vacations also interceding. WFAA8 nonetheless has neared parity with Fox4 in June while NBC5 and CBS11 still lag. This fall will be a much truer test, but WFAA8 has reason to be pumped.

NBC5 swept the 5 p.m. races and also notched a 6 p.m. win with 25-to-54-year-olds. WFAA8 drew the most total viewers at 6 p.m.

Local NIelsen ratings snapshot (Tues.-Thurs., June 4-6) -- hoops vs hockey

By ED BARK
@unclebarkycom on Twitter
When it comes to nets, it’s still no contest between the NBA and NHL -- although both of their biggest showcases remain on downward trends compared to last year.

Thursday’s Game 5 of the Stanley Cup playoffs on NBC, with the St. Louis Blues winning 2-1 over the Boston Bruins, drew just 63,264 D-FW viewers and 27,173 in the advertiser-prized 18-to-49 age range. Last year’s Game 5, in which the Washington Capitals clinched against the Las Vegas Golden Knights, pulled in 121,076 total viewers and 53,050 within the 18-to-49 realm.

Blues-Bruins were outdrawn in total viewers by ABC’s wall-to-wall game shows, CBS’ 7 to 9 p.m. sitcom repeats and Fox4’s 9 p.m. local newscast.

On Wednesday night, the Toronto Raptors’ Game 3 win over the defending champion Golden State Warriors on ABC averaged 393,641 total viewers and 217,382 within the 18-to-49 motherlode. Those numbers were down from last year’s Game 3 between the Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers, which drew 427,326 total viewers and 224,683 in the 18-to-49 age range.

But Game 3 of Raptors-Warriors drew its highest percentage to date of 18-to-49ers. And it also soundly thrashed all competing prime-time programming in both ratings measurements.

In Tuesday’s prime-time Nielsens, NBC’s 7 to 9 p.m. edition of America’s Got Talent pulled in the most total viewers (302,260) while Fox4’s 9 p.m. news ranked No. 1 with 18-to-49-year-olds (75,480).

Here are the local news derby results for Tuesday through Thursday.

Tuesday -- Fox4 swept the 10 p.m. and 6 p.m. competitions in both total viewers and with 25-to-54-year-olds (main advertiser target audience for news programming).

The station also won at 5 and 6 p.m. with 25-to-54-year-olds. WFAA8 drew the most total viewers at 6 p.m. while Fox4 and NBC5 shared the lead in that measurement at 5 p.m.

Wednesday -- Fox4 and NBC5 shared the 10 p.m. lead with total viewers, but Fox4 won outright among 25-to-54-year-olds in a downsized three-way race. WFAA8’s latenighter was delayed by Raptors-Warriors.

Fox4 ran the table at both 6 a.m. and 5 p.m. while the Peacock did likewise at 6 p.m.

Thursday -- WFAA8 had twin wins at 10 p.m. while Fox4 swept the 5 p.m. races.

At 6 a.m., Fox4 and WFAA8 tied for the lead in total viewers, with Fox4 edging WFAA8 for the top spot with 25-to-54-year-olds.

NBC5 and WFAA8 tied for the 6 p.m. golds in total viewers while the Peacock was alone in first among 25-to-54-year-olds.

Local Nielsen ratings snapshot (Mon., June 3) -- competing programs say puck you to NBC's Stanley Cup Finals

By ED BARK
@unclebarkycom on Twitter
Like it or not, there’s a reason why the NBC broadcast network sends the majority of Stanley Cup playoff matches to cable’s NBC Sports Net.

In the D-FW market and many others, the NHL’s biggest stage means nothing to most viewers.

Monday night’s Game 4 of the Cup Finals, won 4-2 by the St. Louis Blues over the Boston Bruins on the main NBC stage, ran a distant last in total D-FW viewers against all competing programming on Fox, ABC and CBS.

Blues-Bruins pulled in 70,293 total viewers while prime-time’s top draw, Fox4’s 9 p.m. local newscast, had 196,820. In comparison, Sunday night’s Game 2 of the NBA Finals pulled in 365,524 viewers, even though those numbers are appreciably down so far from the 2018 Finals.

Hockey also was beaten by Fox’s Beat Shazam (168,703 viewers), CBS’ new 8 p.m. episode of The Code (168,703), CBS’ rerun of Bull (161,674), Fox’s So You Think You Can Dance (140,586), ABC’s Celebrity Family Feud and CBS’ repeat of The Neighborhood (126,527 viewers apiece) and CBS’ Man With a Plan (112,469).

The picture among advertiser-coveted 18-to-49-year-olds proved to be a bit brighter for hockey, which averaged 33,211 viewers in outdrawing all of the programming on old-skewing CBS. But Game 4 of the Cup Finals lost to everything else in this key demographic, with Beat Shazam the night’s top draw with 69,442.

Here are Monday’s local news derby results.

WFAA8 took the 10 p.m. top spot in total viewers while Fox4 won among 25-to-54-year-olds (main advertiser target audience for news programming).

Fox4 won in total viewers at 6 a.m., but was tied by WFAA8 for the No. 1 ranking with 25-to-54-year-olds.

The 5 p.m. wins went to Fox4 in both ratings measurements, with the station also taking the 6 p.m. crown among 25-to-54-year-olds. WFAA8 drew the most total viewers at 6 p.m.

Local Nielsen ratings snapshot (Fri.-Sun., May 31-June 2) -- a second deep dip for NBA Finals

By ED BARK
@unclebarkycom on Twitter
Despite going down to the closing seconds, Sunday night’s Game 2 of the NBA Finals again was no match for last year’s in the D-FW Nielsen ratings.

The injury-riddled Golden State Warriors’ 109-104 road victory over the Toronto Raptors, which ran until 9:47 p.m. on ABC, averaged 365,524 viewers and 187,190 in the advertiser-prized 18-to-49-year-old age range.

That was easily enough to dominate the night, but well below the 470,059 total viewers and 230,294 in the 18-to-49 realm for 2018’s Game 2 between the Warriors and the Cleveland Cavaliers. That was an improvement over the 2017 Game 2 between the same two teams, which had 428,995 total viewers, with 221,290 of them 18-to-49ers.

Again, though, the saving grace is the high percentage of 18-to-49-year-olds, with more than half the crowd for Warriors-Raptors within this key demographic.

On Friday, the prime-time leaders were CBS’ 9 p.m. repeat of Blue Bloods in total viewers (140,586) and Fox4’s 9 p.m. local news and NBC’s Blindspot among 18-to-49-year-olds (27,173 each).

Here are Friday’s four-way local news derby results.

WFAA8 drew the most total viewers at 10 p.m. while Fox4 won with 25-to-54-year-olds (main advertiser target audience for news programming).

Fox4 swept the 6 a.m. races and stayed strong among 25-to-54-year-olds by winning at both 5 and 6 p.m. in that age range. NBC5 had the most total viewers at 5 p.m. and WFAA8 won in that measurement at 6 p.m.

Kezhal Dashti leaves WFAA8 after short stay with Daybreak

@unclebarkycom on Twitter
Kezhal Dashti, who in December was hired as “social media” anchor for WFAA8’s Daybreak, has decided to leave the Dallas-based station, several sources confirm.

Her official “News Team” bio has been quickly removed from wfaa.com.

Dashti, who recently married and is a five-year survivor of ovarian cancer, took a personal leave earlier this year after the program’s early morning hours proved to be longer and more trying than she had expected. She joined WFAA8 from El Paso’s Fox station, KFOX-TV, succeeding Janelle Brandom, who likewise had a short stay with Daybreak.

Dashti, a Texas Christian University journalism graduate, earlier had interned at both NBC5 and with KISS-FM’s Kidd Kraddick in the Morning. She also had a three-month tenure at The Dallas Morning News before joining KFOX in March 2015.

Carolyn Mungo, newly promoted from executive news director to WFAA8’s vice president and station manager, is out of the office until June 10th, according to an automated email reply. But save for very rare instances, she doesn’t respond to inquiries from unclebarky.com.

Dashti has declined to comment further. But in response to a fan, Dashti previously said in a social media post that she’s been “focusing on my mental health” while away from the station and that “WFAA is being super supportive.”

She reportedly is now exploring other opportunities and will “share more when I’m ready.”

Local Nielsen ratings snapshot (Wed.-Thurs., May 29-30) -- deep dive for Game 1 of NBA Finals

By ED BARK
@unclebarkycom on Twitter
Absent LeBron James and with a Canadian team for the first time, Thursday’s Game 1 of the NBA Finals not surprisingly had deflated ratings in D-FW compared to the previous two years.

The Toronto Raptors’ 118-109 win over the defending champ Golden State Warriors, which ended at 10:36 p.m. on ABC, averaged 358,494 total viewers and 178,133 within the advertiser-prized 18-to-49 age range.

Last year’s opener, between the Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers, drew 455,814 total viewers, with 230,924 in the 18-to-49 realm. And that was a drop off from 2017’s Game 1 between the same two teams, which had 501,706 total viewers and 237,325 within the 18-to-49 motherlode.

The good news for the NBA is that no other pro sport draws a higher percentage of 18-to-49ers. In each of these three cases, roughly half the audience hit that sweet spot.

Game 1 still dominated all competing programming. The runner-up in both ratings measurements, Fox4’s 9 p.m. local newscast, had 161,674 total viewers and 48,307 of the 18-to-49 persuasion.

Fox4’s 9 p.m. news otherwise paced Wednesday’s prime-time programming with 210,879 total viewers. And it tied Fox’s 7 p.m. episode of Masterchef among 18-to-49-year-olds with 60,384 apiece.

NBC’s 7 to 9 p.m. season premiere of American Ninja Warrior had decent returns with 133,557 total viewers and 51,326 in the 18-to-49 demographic. It won the 8 to 9 p.m. hour in both ratings measurements before the Peacock’s premiere of The InBetween fell hard, particularly with 18-to-49ers (a sub-measly 9,058).

Here are the local news derby results for Wednesday and Thursday.

Wednesday -- WFAA8 won at 10 p.m. in total viewers while Fox4 took the top spot with 25-to-54-year-olds (main advertiser target audience for news programming).

Fox4 swept the 6 a.m. races and added 5 and 6 p.m. wins with 25-to-54-year-olds. NBC5 had the most total viewers at both 5 and 6 p.m.

Thursday -- NBC5 won a downsized three-way race at 10 p.m. in both ratings measurements.

Fox4 again ran the table at 6 a.m. The 6 p.m. spoils went to NBC5 in total viewers and Fox4 among 25-to-54-year-olds. At 5 p.m., WFAA8 had the most total viewers and Fox4 won among 25-to-54-year-olds.
