Local Nielsen ratings snapshot (Fri.-Sun., July 26-28) -- Fox4's local news again paces prime-time

By ED BARK
@unclebarkycom on Twitter
Continuing its summertime hot streak, Fox4’s 9 p.m. local newscast easily topped Sunday’s prime-time field while a pair of ABC’s game shows also fared well in total D-FW viewers.

The news drew 210,879 viewers, trampolining off puny audiences from the Fox network’s 7 to 9 p.m. attractions. CBS prospered at 6 p.m. with a time slot-leading 147,615 viewers before the network’s Big Brother tailed off sharply to 49,205 viewers.

The 7 to 9 p.m. hours were won by ABC’s Celebrity Family Feud (154,645 viewers) and $100,000 Pyramid (147,615).

In the advertiser-prized 18-to-49-year-old demographic, Fox4’s news again scored biggest with 66,422 viewers. The 6 to 9 p.m. hours respectively were won by ABC’s America’s Funniest Videos, NBC’s U.S. track and field championships and $100,000 Pyramid.

On Friday night, Fox4’s 9 p.m. news again led all programming in total viewers with 98,410 while Fox’s 7 p.m. repeat of First Responders Live led among 18-to-49ers (27,173).

Here are Friday’s four-way local news derby results.

WFAA8 won at 10 p.m. in both total viewers and with 25-to-54-year-olds (main advertiser target audience for news programming).

Fox4 swept both the 6 a.m. and 5 p.m. competitions. The 6 p.m. golds went to WFAA8 in total viewers and Fox4 among 25-to-54-year-olds.

Local Nielsen ratings snapshot (Wed.-Thurs., July 24-25) -- summertime dumper for first-run CBS fare

By ED BARK
@unclebarkycom on Twitter
D-FW viewers continued to maroon Love Island Thursday night while also making it tough on followup hours of two other first-run CBS series.

Love Island sucked in just 35,147 viewers in the 7 p.m. hour to run last in that slot among the Big Four broadcast networks. Fox’s Masterchef led the way with 133,557 viewers.

CBS’ usually potent Big Brother got dragged down by LI,, with its 42,176 viewers again putting the network last. Fox’s 8 p.m. attraction, Spin the Wheel, won the hour with 112,469 viewers. Fox4’s 9 p.m. local newscast then amassed Thursday’s biggest prime-time audience with 189,791 viewers while CBS’ new episode of Elementary was last and least with 35,147 viewers.

Among advertiser-coveted 18-to-49-year-olds, Fox4’s news again paced prime-time with 42,269 viewers. LI and BB both ran last in this key demographic before Elementary tied NBC’s Law & Order: SVU for third in the 9 p.m. hour.

On Wednesday, Fox4’s 9 p.m. news again easily led the way in total viewers with a prime-time best of 231,367. Love Island, which airs each weeknight at 7 p.m., was lowest of the low with 28,117 viewers while Big Brother likewise logged another last-place finish in the 8 p.m. hour with 37,147.

In the 18-to-49 Nielsens, Fox4’s local news again was kingpin with 72,461 viewers.

Here are the local news derby results for Wednesday and Thursday.

Wednesday -- Fox4 and WFAA8 tied for the most total viewers at 10 p.m., but Fox4 was alone in first with 25-to-54-year-olds (main advertiser target audience for news programming).

Fox4 had twin wins at 6 a.m. while NBC5 swept the 5 p.m. competitions. At 6 p.m., NBC5 and WFAA8 shared the top spot in total viewers while the Peacock ran first outright with 25-to-54-year-olds. CBS11’s lengthy winless summertime drought continued, with “hashmarks” (no measurable audience) at 5 p.m. in the 25-to-54-year-old demographic.

Thursday -- As on Wednesday, Fox4 and WFAA8 shared the 10 p.m. lead in total viewers while Fox4 had the top spot to itself with 25-to-54-year-olds.

Fox4 logged another 6 a.m. sweep. WFAA8 drew the most total viewers at both 5 and 6 p.m., and NBC5 had the 25-to-54 firsts at those hours.

Local Nielsen ratings snapshot (Wed., July 10 to Tues., July 23) -- extended look at local TV news battles

By ED BARK
@unclebarkycom on Twitter
Returning from some time off means there’s a lot of catching up to do.

But with this extended ratings “snapshot,” I’m not going to get into the nuts and bolts of all the prime-time ratings. Instead this will be a compendium of the weekday local news derby battles at 6 a.m. and 5, 6 and 10 p.m. It will give you a rough idea of who’s been making some headway during the long, hot summertime -- and who hasn’t. And since many of the news staffers at Fox4, NBC5, WFAA8 and CBS11 generally aren’t privy to this info, it also will give them some looks at how their stations are doing. Remember, though, that viewing levels generally are lower during this time while some of the star on-camera players are intermittently taking their vacations.

In chronological order, here we go:

Wednesday, July 10 -- Fox4 swept the 10 p.m. competitions in total viewers and with 25-to-54-year-olds (main advertiser target audience for news programming) while also winning at 6 p.m. in both measurements.

WFAA8 nipped Fox4 for first place in total viewers at 6 a.m. and the two stations tied for the top spot among 25-to-54-year-olds. WFAA8 ran the table at 5 p.m.

Thursday, July 11 -- Fox4 came within a fingernail of a very rare double grand slam. The station had twin wins at 6 a.m. and 5 and 6 p.m. while also running first at 10 p.m. with 25-to-54-year-olds. In total viewers at 10 p.m., Fox4 and WFAA8 tied for the lead if the numbers are rounded off to the nearest decimal point. But WFAA8 otherwise gets a paper-thin win with 2.12 ratings points compared to Fox4’s 2.09.

Friday, July 12 -- Three stations enjoyed sweeps. WFAA8 won in both ratings measurements at 10 p.m., Fox4 did likewise at 6 a.m. and NBC5 broke through with a doubleheader win at 5 p.m. The 6 p.m. golds went to WFAA8 in total viewers and Fox4 with 25-to-54-year-olds.

Monday, July 15 -- WFAA8 ran first at 10 p.m. in total viewers and Fox4 took the 25-to-54 crown.

Fox4 ran the table at 6 a.m. and 5 p.m. while WFAA8 did the same at 6 p.m.

Tuesday, July 16 -- Fox4 swept the 6 a.m. and 5 p.m. races while also drawing the most 25-to-54-year-olds at 6 and 10 p.m. WFAA8 won in total viewers at both 6 and 10 p.m.

Wednesday, July 17 -- WFAA8 drew the most total viewers at 10 p.m. but was nipped among 25-to-54-year-olds by Fox4.

Fox4 again ruled at 6 a.m. and 5 p.m. NBC5 won at 6 p.m. in total viewers and Fox4 was tops with 25-to-54-year-olds.

Thursday, July 18 -- WFAA8 scored twin wins at 10 p.m. while Fox4 ran the table at 6 a.m. and 5 p.m. The 6 p.m. firsts went to WFAA8 in total viewers and Fox4 among 25-to-54-year-olds.

Friday, July 19 -- WFAA8 again ruled in both ratings measurements at 10 p.m. while Fox4 did likewise at 6 a.m. and 5 p.m. The 6 p.m. spoils went to WFAA8 in total viewers and NBC5 with 25-to-54-year-olds.

Monday, July 22 -- WFAA8 took the 10 p.m. trophy in total viewers and Fox4 won among 25-to-54-year-olds while also again sweeping the 6 a.m. competitions.

WFAA8 ran first at 5 and 6 p.m. in total viewers. The 25-to-54 wreaths went to NBC5 at 5 p.m. and Fox4 at 6 p.m.

Tuesday, July 23 -- Fox4 ran first in total viewers at 10 p.m. and NBC5 drew the most 25-to-54-year-olds.

Fox4 reigned at 6 a.m. and took the 25-to-54-golds at 5 and 6 p.m. WFAA8 won in total viewers at 5 and 6 p.m.

Comments -- It’s clear who the summertime kingpins are. Fox4 and WFAA8 won just about everything in sight, save for six first-place finishes by NBC5 during these 10 weekdays. And if you’re CBS11, well, you wouldn’t want to be. The station went winless in a total of 80 face-offs among the four stations.

NBC5 anchor/reporter Kristin Dickerson is going with God, leaving the station

Kristin+Dickerson-2019

By ED BARK

Prominent local TV news personalities lately are hearing higher callings -- and answering them.

As previously posted, WFAA8 meteorologist Colleen Coyle’s decision to leave the station and spend more time with her recently adopted daughter is in large part faith-based. Or as she put it in a Facebook video, “Putting our trust in the Lord won’t make our life perfect, but it will let a perfect savior lead our life.”

NBC5 weekend PM anchor and weekday reporter Kristin Dickerson has also decided to let Jesus take the wheel.

She is leaving the Fort Worth-based station and with her husband will soon embark on a “storytelling faith walk,” Dickerson says in a printed Facebook post.

“We’ll travel to some of the most spiritual places in the world to learn about the commonality among people of various faiths and backgrounds -- and we plan to share their stories and our journey with you,” she says.

The details of their “platform,” (YouTube, podcasts, sharing videos in churches, etc.) have yet to be worked out. But Dickerson knows that their journey will start with “walking the 500-mile Camino de Santiago across Spain” before visiting Israel and India.

“I’ve been told leaving my job and everything I’ve worked to achieve the last 15 years in TV news is a risk, but I feel the biggest risk is not taking it,” Dickerson says.

The Oklahoma State University graduate joined NBC5 in July 2016 after a 12-year stay at Tulsa’s ABC affiliate, KTUL-TV.

WFAA8 meteorologist Colleen Coyle leaves after nine years (updated from original Twitter post)

531133280_750x422

By ED BARK
@unclebarkycom on Twitter
Followers of my Twitter feed, @unclebarkycom, first learned on Friday, July 12th of meteorologist Colleen Coyle’s surprise departure from WFAA8 after nine years in residence.

But I had just started an out-of-town sojourn, and was unable to post on unclebarky.com until now. So here’s a fuller story.

In a memo to WFAA8 staffers, vice president/station manager Carolyn Mungo said that Coyle initially had planned to take an “extended leave” to spend time with her “newly adopted daughter.” But Coyle then decided to make that leave permanent. The station gave her a sendoff late last week. In her memo, Mungo (who does not talk to your friendly content provider) praised Coyle as “everything you would want in an employee. She is talented, dedicated and served the entire community in so many ways.”

Coyle joined WFAA8 in July 2010 from CBS affiliate KPSP-TV, which serves Palm Springs, CA and the Coachella Valley. She was with that station for a year-and-a-half before making a giant leap from the 142nd to the 5th largest TV market. Less than a year later, she was subbing for a week on ABC’s Good Morning America. At that time, Coyle was doing weathercasts for WFAA8’s weekend editions of Daybreak while otherwise filling in on weekdays. The station gave her more prominent exposure in subsequent years, but Pete Delkus has a firm grip on the chief weathercaster position.

Last week, Coyle elaborated on her decision via an emotional Facebook video in which she repeatedly cited her faith in God.

The “little girl” adopted by Coyle and her husband actually is “not that little. She’s almost a teenager,” she said. Opting to spend more time with her “has been a really, really tough decision, and know that it’s been done with so much thought and fierce prayer,” Coyle said.

Her identity is “found in Christ,” not with her job at WFAA8, Coyle said she’s come to realize. “Putting our trust in the Lord won’t make our life perfect, but it will let a perfect savior lead our life . . . I’ve been walking through the same door for nine years, and it is so scary to walk through a new one.”

Coyle said she’s now “keeping all the doors open . . . Who knows, it may be TV one day again. I have no idea, but I know that God’s got this.”

She ended the video by blowing a kiss to viewers.

Coyle is the third prominent news personality to leave WFAA8 this year, joining anchor dean John McCaa, who retired, and Daybreak co-anchor Ron Corning, who exited to pursue other opportunities.

At least temporarily, Coyle’s departure makes WFAA8 the only one of four local TV news providers without a woman meteorologist. But it’s almost a given that Mungo will hire a woman to replace her.

Local Nielsen ratings snapshot (Mon.-Tues., July 8-9) -- All-Star game swings a bigger stick while Love Island premiere plays like limp dick

By ED BARK
@unclebarkycom on Twitter
CBS’ long-term plans for Love Island were jilted in D-FW Tuesday night when the 90-minute premiere of the British “reality” knockoff got marooned opposite NBC’s America’s Got Talent and Fox’s telecast of major league baseball’s All-Star game.

Scheduled to run on every weeknight through Aug. 8th, Love Island opened to just 63,264 total viewers and 30,192 within the advertiser-prized 18-to-49-year-old age range.

NBC’s two-hour edition of America’s Got Talent reigned from 7 to 9 p.m. with 295,231 total viewers before the network’s launch of Bring the Funny won the 9 p.m. hour with 182,762. The All-Star game, which ran a bit past 10 p.m. and was won 4-3 by the American League, averaged 147,615 total viewers, an improvement over last year’s 142,442.

The All-Star game made its biggest strides with 18-to-49ers, though, pulling in 60,384 compared to last year’s 37,447. It also beat the 2017 mark of 57,728 viewers in this key demographic. Tuesday night’s performance was good enough to tie AGT in the 18-to-49 realm, but the All-Stars tailed off and lost from 9 to 10 p.m. to Bring the Funny (66,422).

On Monday night, ESPN’s nearly three-hour All-Star Home Run Derby averaged 119,498 total viewers and a robust 75,480 in the 18-to-49 motherlode. That was good enough to tie ABC’s The Bachelorette for the Monday night lead in this age range. Which is very good news for baseball.

OK, here are the Monday and Tuesday local news derby results.

Monday -- WFAA8 won in total viewers at 10 p.m. while Fox4 led with 25-to-54-year-olds (main advertiser target audience for news programming).

Fox4 swept the 6 a.m. and 5 p.m. competitions, and at 6 p.m. tied CBS11 for the top spot among 25-to-54-year-olds. NBC5 drew the most total viewers at 6 p.m.

Tuesday -- WFAA8 ran the table at 10 p.m. in a downsized three-way competition while Fox4’s late nighter was delayed by All-Star post-game coverage.

Fox4 again swept the 6 a.m. and 5 p.m. races before adding a 6 p.m. win with 25-to-54-year-olds. CBS11 had the most total viewers at 6 p.m.

Local Nielsen ratings snapshot (Thurs.-Sun., July 4-7) -- World Cup soccer brunch serves up an Eggs Benedict

By ED BARK
@unclebarkycom on Twitter
Fox was served well by the U.S. women’s Sunday brunch soccer win over the Netherlands to win their second straight World Cup.

The match, which ran from 10 to 11:54 a.m., averaged 449,875 D-FW viewers, with a peak crowd of 534,227 for the closing minutes. A decent-sized percentage -- 178,133 -- were within the advertiser-prized 18-to-49-year-old age range.

Both totals easily ranked as Sunday’s high points. ABC’s 7 p.m. episode of Celebrity Family Feud ranked second in both total viewers (189,791) and with 18-to-49ers (63,403).

OK, let’s rewind back to the Fourth of July, where NBC’s prime-time presentation of the Macy’s Fireworks show fizzled in the face of Fox4’s 9 p.m. local newscast. It was the day’s top draw in total viewers with 147,615 and also ranked No. 1 in the 18-to-49 demographic (45,288).

ABC’s 7 p.m. edition of Steph Curry’s Holey Moley miniature golf game show spent the night in the rough with 49,205 total viewers and just 6,038 within the 18-to-49 motherlode. But the network’s 9 p.m. hour of Reef Break in comparison drove into the ratings fairway with 112,469 total viewers and 24,154 in the 18-to-49 realm.

We won’t bother with the local news derby results because holiday exemptions were mostly in play. Only WFAA8 played for keeps on both July 4th and 5th.

NBC5 adds Vince Sims as anchor/reporter

Fort Worth-based NBC5 is adding Vince Sims as a weekend evening co-anchor and weekday reporter.

He’ll be arriving from Atlanta’s WGCL-TV (CBS46) at the end of this month after a five-year stay at the CBS station, where Sims has been a reporter and fill-in anchor. NBC5 hasn’t yet officially announced his hiring.

“I’m so excited for this opportunity,” Sims says on his Facebook page. “Dallas is a great move for me professionally, going to market #5 . . . God is ordering my steps to bigger things and I stand on faith that this is the right move for me.”

Sims’ departure from WGCL was first reported by Rodney Ho of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The Arkansas native and graduate of the University of Central Arkansas previously worked for TV stations in Pittsburgh, Louisiana and Oklahoma according to his CBS46 bio.

The station says he “enjoys dining out, playing tennis, playing pool, swimming and just socializing with friends. His weird hobby is collecting matchbooks.”
