Local Nielsen ratings snapshot (Fri.-Sun., Aug. 20-22) -- Cowboys roll up numbers but Rangers peek through

The weekend's top ratings attraction of course turned out to be Saturday night's third Dallas Cowboys pre-season game, a 16-14 win at San Diego.

CBS11's prime-time telecast averaged 685,416 D-FW viewers, peaking at 773,638 between 9 and 9:15 p.m.

Meanwhile, the first-place Texas Rangers took two of their last three road games in Baltimore, popping up on three different channels.

Friday night's game, on TXA21, had 162,871 viewers to lead all prime-time programming, including Fox's Eagles-Bengals pre-season game (101,795 viewers).

The Saturday Rangers-Orioles game, an afternoon affair on Fox, drew 149,299 viewers. Sunday afternoon's game segued to the Rangers' usual home, Fox Sports Southwest, where 142,512 viewers watched the Rangers end their less than successful seven-game road trip with a win. FSS's following repeat of the Cowboy-Chargers game dipped to 33,932 viewers.

Sunday's most-watched attraction, NBC's Vikings-49ers pre-season matchup, featured Brett Favre playing Minnesota's opening series of downs. It had 285,025 viewers.

In Friday's local news derby results, WFAA8 swept the 10 p.m. Nielsens in both total viewers and 25-to-54-year-olds, the main advertiser target audience for news programming on most stations.

Fox4 likewise ran the table at 6 a.m. The early evening newscasts again were split verdicts, with WFAA8 winning at both 5 and 6 p.m. in total viewers while NBC5 ran first with 25-to-54-year-olds.
